How everything started
In mid-2021, the IShowSpeed channel gained its first million subscribers on YouTube. The dream was fulfilled for Darren Watkins Jr., who later became known only as “Speed.” But that was only the beginning of international fame that would lead him to be among the most popular streamers in the world at only 20 years old.
Originally from the city of Cincinnati in Ohio, the young man began making videos from his room since 2016. The theme of his content used to be gameplays and comments on video games such as FIFA, NBA 2K and Fortnight. Officially, it began broadcasting in 2019 and reached greater popularity two years later.
“When I started broadcasting, I only had one viewer, two, and that helped me continue,” Watkins Jr. said in an interview with Forbes. "In the second week, I started getting an average of four viewers. In the third, I started getting an average of 17 viewers. As more people watched, I thought I could get somewhere with this, and I was having fun. That's what kept me going."
A streamer with tons of followers
Unlike other Twitch and YouTube streamers, Speed gained more and more followers for his honest and unfiltered charisma, that is, reactions with meme potential. He would lash out at the computer or other online players, behavior that appealed to a strong male community in the video game sector.
There was no script or preparation involved. "It's quite improvised, natural. Everything is random events. Things just happen," he said.
It should be noted that the famous streamer was not without controversy and, in fact, was banned from Twitch. The platform's reason for closing his profile was his misogynistic and derogatory comments live.
Ishowspeed phone number is the most googled
According to Google's latest statistics, "Ishowspeed phone number " was the most googled influencer this year. Due to the increasing demand, it was increasingly difficult for Speed to get his video game content forward and in 2022 he made a change to his content: focusing more on football, a sport for which he is always very passionate. He is a declared fan of Cristiano Ronaldo and has even been able to meet him in person.
Just that same year, the young man began to monetize his YouTube channel, managing to obtain views from viewers interested in football. At the same time, he continued working on video game gameplays, varied content with his friends, outings with girls and even original music produced by himself.
"When I got to that moment, I started crying because [there were] a million live viewers, something I had always dreamed of. That is the achievement that every streamer wants to achieve. And I did it alone. No collaboration. No event. Just me broadcasting. That is true art," he admitted to Forbes.
He as collaborated with several celebrities
The following year, in June, Speed got his long-awaited meeting with Cristiano Ronaldo. Wearing a Portugal shirt, the young man saw a car park nearby and immediately took out his cell phone to take a photo.
“Oh my God!” he began to scream once CR7 got out of the vehicle. She ran towards him and hugged him tightly. "I love you, brother. I have you here," he added in reference to the tattoo he has on his left arm. They both shared a handshake and then recreated the Portuguese player's famous celebration.
Speed's closeness to the world of football even led him to attend the Balloon d'Or award ceremony in 2023, organized by the specialized French magazine France Football. There he met the Norwegian player Erlang Hoagland and saw live how Messi received the ostentatious award.
Speed and his world tour
In addition to his passion for soccer, the American streamer has managed to gain more audience thanks to his world tour that began in 2024 improvised with Brazil in February; South Korea in May; England in May; Albania in June; Poland, Sweden, Norway, Bulgaria and Romania in July; Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Malaysia and Singapore in September; Australia and New Zealand in November.
His global journey has not been without curious moments, especially with fans in the streets who number in dozens and who barely let him walk.
"When I was in Malaysia, I got locked in a restaurant. I couldn't leave the restaurant because there were too many people. It wasn't safe," he recalled of his experience in Southeast Asia.
While, about Europe, he added: "People jumped on me. Sometimes it gets too crazy, and I hate that. It's always a way to have fun, to get crazy, but safely. Sometimes people get too crazy, but it is what it is."
